Leo Cabalka - Coach

Leo Cabalka was a beloved coach and mentor to many Edina students and athletes during his 27 year tenure in the Edina Public Schools. Leo taught PE at Southview and Valley View middle schools and was the district pool director. He was the assistant varsity baseball coach at Edina West. Perhaps his greatest impact was his role in building the basketball dynasty of Edina in the late 1960s. He was the 9th grade boys basketball coach at both middle schools. There he mentored many students and shared his great sense of humor with them. For years, inductees in the Athletic Hall of Fame have been thanking Leo for making a difference in their lives. Leo always taught his players to enjoy every moment, every game, every contest and have fun doing it. Leo and his wife Evelyn raised six children together.

Mick Stenson - Class of '66

A varsity player excelling in football, basketball and baseball, Mick boasts many achievements. Perhaps his most unique claim to fame was in baseball, when as a sophomore, he was chosen to make a Wheaties commercial with some well known major league baseball players. In basketball, Mick's team won the 1966 state tournament. In arguably one of the most exciting tournaments in history, they finally overcame Duluth East in overtime to take the championship. On the football field, Mick kept busy playing three years. His entire football career included only one loss his junior year and the defensive line gave up only 52 years on the ground that game. Mick lives in Edina with his wife and two daughters. Since 1979, Mick has been busy as the President and Co-Owner of Davanni's.

Doug Hastings - Class of '69

Doug Hastings excelled at two sports during his time at Edina, receiving a total of five letters in football and hockey. In football, Doug was nicknamed "The Thief" because of the many interceptions he made as a defensive back. Doug was the captain of the first Edina State Championship team in hockey in 1969, providing him with many lasting memories. He helped that team go 16-0 in the Lake Conference with twelve shutouts and a grand total of only 7 goals allowed, for an average of .4 goals allowed per game. The season ended with fifteen shutouts in 26 games, a total of 23 goals allowed for an average of .9 over game, and of course, the state title. Doug continued his hockey career through college at the University of Michigan and the University of Minnesota. Doug currently lives in Burnsville with his wife Julie.

Phil Olson - Class of '75

From 1972-1975 three-sport athlete Phil Olson dominated the scene for Edina's football, basketball and track teams. Phil earned seven varsity letters, was All State in both football and track, All Conference in basketball, and Co-Captain of all three sports. Phil went undefeated in track his senior year, winning every meet in the discus including the Minnesota State Track Championship, and setting a State meet record. Phil also broke the Edina records for both discus and shot put, a title he held for two and five years respectively. He also helped the team win the State Track Meeting Championship in 1974. Phil attended Dartmouth College where he excelled in both football and indoor and outdoor track. After graduating, Phil went on to receive an MBA from the University of Chicago and pursued a business career while writing stage and screenplays. Phil currently lives outside of Los Angeles where he writes and produces plays. Phil has written five award-winning plays set in small towns in Minnesota.

Karl Mecklenburg - Class of '78

Kark Mecklenburg took his athletic career and success at Edina and turned it into a full-time career. Participating in football, Karl earned numerous honors for his play: All State Tight End, All State Defensive End and All Conference Defensive End. Karl attended Augustana College, then transferred to the University of Minnesota. Karl's strong performance on and off the field earned him 2nd Team All Big Ten and Honorable Mention Academic All American awards. Karl had an outstanding football career with the Denver Broncos where he played from 1983-1994. Karl played in six Pro Bowl games and had three Super Bowl appearances with the Broncos. Today Karl and his wife Kathi live in Littleton, CO. They have three children. Karl is a motivational teamwork and leadership speaker, along with being an award-winning author. His book Heart of A Student Athlete is a Mom's Choice Award gold winner.

Dan Plante - Class of '90

A newcomer to Edina his junior year, Dan quickly embraced his new world excelling in hockey and football. Football held a special place in Dan's heart although he never quite mastered the football chant in the huddle. In hockey, Dan's boyhood dreams came true when serving as Captain he skated up to the blue line as they called his name and he nodded to the camera at the Minnesota State Hockey tournament during the 1989-90 season. After high school Dan continued to shine in college hockey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was captain during the 1992-93 season. He went on to play professional hockey with the New York Islanders from 1996-1998. Dan currently lives in Woodbury with his wife Bridget and their four children. He would tell Edina's young people to "seize the day and recognized all you have."

Sara VanderTop Bryan - Class of '95

Sara VanderTop Bryan has great memories of the Edina school spirit and is proud to be a Hornet. And what a Hornet she was- both on the basketball court and on the soccer field. In basketball she was a three-time All Conference player. Her senior year she was named All Metro, All State, Captain and was recognized as a 1,000 point scorer. In soccer she excelled having been named a four year All Conference Player, two year All Metro, two year All State and was named to the state tournament's All Tournament team. An Academic All Big Tem basketball player at the University of Illinois, Sara also excelled in the classroom, earning her B.S. in Kinesiology and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She lives in St. Louis Park with her husband and enjoys travel, exercise and sports.

Jenny Potter - Class of '97

Jenny Potter had an excellent athletic and academic career while at Edina High School. Graduating in the top 5% of her class, she also found time to take advantage of the excellent opportunities in sports, participating in cross-country, swimming and playing on the boys JV hockey team. After graduation, Jenny took her hockey talent to the University of Minnesota - Duluth where she accumulated many honors and awards. Following college, Jenny's hockey career took her to the Olympics where she has played in every Olympic hockey tournament since the IOC introduced the event to the winter games. In the Olympics, Jenny's teams have won bronze (2006), silver (2002) and gold (1998) medals. Jenny currently lives in Anoka with her husband and two children. Jenny encourages today's students to "Be yourself, And don't take the short cut!"
